If you're looking for the perfect family getaway that swaps the grey British drizzle for golden autumn sunshine, look no further than Málaga! We recently took the kids for a three-day adventure on the Costa del Sol, and it was the ultimate mix of ancient history and modern, interactive fun.
From conquering castles to becoming rockstars in a music museum, here is the lowdown on our trip and why Málaga should be your next family destination.
🚆 Getting Around: Seamless and Easy
We started our journey with a smooth train ride into Málaga Central station. One of our best tips for families is that contactless payments work perfectly on the local trains, just like in the UK! It made navigating with the kids so much easier than queuing at ticket machines.
🏰 Day 1: Castles and Coastal Views
We kicked things off by exploring the city’s historic gems. We grabbed a combined ticket for the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle, which cost us £25 for the whole family (children under a certain age are free!).
The Alcazaba: This Moorish fortress is full of beautiful ruins and hidden water gardens. The kids loved following the water channels through the grounds.
The Climb: We opted to walk up the ramp to the castle. It’s a bit of a hike, but the panoramic views of the city, mountains, and sea from the top are absolutely worth the effort.
The Beach: After all that exploring, we headed down to Malagueta Beach. Even in December, the temperature was a lovely 17-20°C—warm enough for the kids to go barefoot in the sand and enjoy the beachfront playgrounds while we waited for our hotel check-in.
🥁 Day 2: Museums with a Twist
Málaga is fantastic for "Old vs. New" experiences. We spent our second day diving into some of the city's more modern attractions.
Interactive Music Museum (MIMMA): This was a huge hit! It’s designed for kids to get hands-on. The "Red Zones" allow them to actually play the instruments—Renzo even got to try a grand piano, while Isla went straight for the giant gong.
Video Game Museum (OXO): A dream for gamers of all ages! We paid around €39 for a family entry and spent hours interacting with games ranging from retro classics to the latest tech.
🥘 Food & Atmosphere
One thing we learned quickly: book your tables! We were surprised to find that even at 2:00 PM, many local restaurants were fully booked. We eventually found a lovely spot called La Traienda where we tucked into fresh fried fish and olives.
The city itself feels incredibly welcoming. The wide, marble-floored walking areas near the port are perfect for a family stroll to see the cruise ships and enjoy the Christmas lights.
