If you’re looking for a city that perfectly balances "cool" and "kid-friendly," Stockholm is it! We recently traded the British countryside for three days of exploring Sweden’s stunning capital. From flying trains to Viking feasts, this city blew us away with how much there is for families to do.
Here is our first-person guide to making the most of a long weekend in Stockholm.
🚆 Arrival: Speeding into the City
We landed from Oslo and headed straight for the Arlanda Express.
Top Money-Saving Tip: Kids travel for free on the express train! We only had to pay for four adult tickets, which was a great start to the trip. [01:50]
The Journey: It only takes about 18 minutes to reach Stockholm Central. The trains are sleek, clean, and even have cute window lamps that the kids loved. [02:22]
🏨 Staying in the Heart of the Action
We stayed at the Scandic Go, which was perfect for our family of six. The kids were obsessed with the football machine in the lobby [04:06] and the bunk beds in our room. It was centrally located, making it easy to drop our bags and start exploring on foot.
🏰 Day 1: Old Town Charms & Royal Spaces
We spent our first afternoon in Gamla Stan (the Old Town).
The Vibe: The roads are wide and pedestrian-friendly, which is a dream when you’re navigating with children. [03:38]
The Shops: We found a fantastic English bookshop (Science Fiction Bokhandeln) where we picked up some illustrated Nordic Tales. [07:39]
The Royal Palace: The square is vast and impressive—perfect for the kids to run around while we admired the architecture and the guards. [08:16]
🚢 Day 2: Island Hopping & Hands-on History
Stockholm is spread across islands, so we spent day two on Djurgården, the "green" island.
Vasa Museum: Seeing a nearly fully intact 17th-century ship is something we’ll never forget. It’s breathtaking. [10:03]
Skansen (Open Air Museum): This was a highlight! We tried our hand at pottery and glass blowing. The kids got stuck in with the clay, and although their hands were a mess, the pride on their faces when they finished their pots was priceless. [13:26]
The Views: Skansen offers some of the best viewpoints over the city—perfect for a family photo. [14:18]
🎢 Day 3: Magic, Wrecks & Meatballs
Our final day was all about the kids' imagination.
Junibacken (Children’s Museum): We boarded the Story Train, and it felt like we were actually flying through the scenes of Swedish children’s books. It was incredibly immersive, with moving parts and beautiful lighting. [15:41]
The Wreck Museum: This was surprisingly interactive. The kids loved turning the cabinets and using the LCD screens to learn about shipwrecks. [20:35]
The Viking Museum: We couldn't leave Sweden without trying authentic meatballs. We had a feast of creamy mashed potatoes, pickles, and sweet red lingonberries. Renzo even gave the meatballs a huge thumbs up! [21:22]
⛴️ A Little Travel Hack
Instead of the tram, try the Number 82 Ferry to get back to the Old Town. It costs the same as a bus or metro ticket but gives you incredible views of the city from the water. It only takes 10 minutes and is a total adventure for the kids! [22:50]
